  • Irritable bowel syndrome

    Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)  is extremely common, with up to 20% of our population suffering from it.  It's key features are a change in bowel habit from normal associated with abdominal pain or discomfort.   • Inflammatory bowel disease

    Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)  comprises ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease. In ulcerative colitis (UC) there is inflammation of the large bowel, whereas Crohn's disease may affect any part of the gastrointestinal tract. Symptoms can include diarrhoea, abdominal pains and rectal bleeding. Symptoms can often be disabling, meaning that finding the right specialist to treat and support you is important.   • Heartburn

    Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD) is a very common condition. It occurs when excess stomach acid moves up from the stomach into the oesophagus (gullet). The most common symptoms are heartburn (burning sensation behind the breastbone) and regurgitation (an unpleasant sensation of material moving upwards in the chest), but it can cause a number of other problems such as hoarse voice, cough, sore throat.   • Swallowing problems

    Difficulty swallowing (dysphagia) is a troublesome symptom that can have many causes. If you have difficulty swallowing it is important to consult a doctor to rule out a serious condition (such as oesophageal cancer). However, most cases are not caused by cancer, but require a careful evaluation as there are a number of possible causes.   • Dyspepsia and ulcer disease

    Dyspepsia describes a collection of symptoms originating from the upper gastrointestinal tract (particularly the stomach). Symptoms include upper abdominal pain and discomfort, nausea, and upper abdominal bloating. There are a number of causes including the presence of a bacteria in the stomach (Helicobacter pylori), and stomach and duodenal ulcers.   • Barrett's oesophagus

    Barrett's oesophagus is a condition where gastro-oesophageal reflux causes a change in the cell type in the lower oesophagus (the cells change to resemble those of the stomach). The importance of Barrett's oesophagus is that it carries a small but increased risk of oesophageal cancer. It requires careful evaluation by endoscopy, and in some cases it can be removed by a process called radio-frequency ablation.
