Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD) is a very common condition. It occurs when excess stomach acid moves up from the stomach into the oesophagus (gullet). The most common symptoms are heartburn (burning sensation behind the breastbone) and regurgitation (an unpleasant sensation of material moving upwards in the chest), but it can cause a number of other problems such as hoarse voice, cough, sore throat. Barrett's oesophagus is a condition where gastro-oesophageal reflux causes a change in the cell type in the lower oesophagus (the cells change to resemble those of the stomach). The importance of Barrett's oesophagus is that it carries a small but increased risk of oesophageal cancer. It requires careful evaluation by endoscopy, and in some cases it can be removed by a process called radio-frequency ablation.
